Our Story

Easelwood makes solid-wood furniture the slow way. We began in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with a simple conviction: that a piece of furniture should be honest about what it is — real timber, visible joinery, and a form that earns its place in a room for decades rather than seasons.

Our work happens across two places. Design lives in Portsmouth, where each piece is drawn, prototyped and refined. Building happens at our mill in Henniker, NH, where those drawings meet the timber — beams are milled, joints are cut, and every chair, table and bench is shaped and finished by hand. The two ends of the state, and the two halves of the craft, are what the Mill Collection is named for.

We work almost entirely in solid timber — American walnut and white oak for the seating and fine tables, kiln-dried structural white cedar for the monolithic Henniker and Mill pieces. No veneers, no particleboard. Joinery is cut and wedged by hand; where a joint needs a key we use solid brass or a contrasting wood rather than hidden hardware. Finishes are open-pore, repairable oils that can be refreshed at home and only look better with age.

Because it is natural wood, no two pieces are identical. Grain wanders, knots appear, and — especially in the softer white cedar — fine surface checks open as the timber settles. We do not sand these away or hide them; they are the material telling the truth about where it came from, and they give each piece a character a factory finish never could.

Everything is made to order. That means a short wait, but also that the timber, dimensions and finish can be considered for your space rather than a warehouse shelf. We build things meant to be lived with, handed down, and — eventually — repaired rather than replaced.
