From the workshop

Craftsmanship from every angle.

The Portland Chair is cut from thick solid planks — American walnut or white oak — splayed and through-joined with contrasting inserts: solid brass on the walnut, walnut on the white oak. Generous, low and unapologetically sturdy, it reads as sculpture from every angle and sits even better than it looks. Choose the deep chocolate of walnut or the pale, open grain of white oak.

Each chair is cut, shaped and finished by hand at our Henniker mill. The inserts are not decoration — they lock the joinery and can be re-tensioned decades from now. As a natural solid-wood piece, the grain and figure vary from chair to chair.

Craft & materials
Every piece is designed in Portsmouth, NH and made to order at our mill in Henniker, NH from solid, sustainably sourced timber — no veneers, no particleboard. We work in hardwoods like walnut and white oak and in kiln-dried structural white cedar. Because it is natural solid wood, expect grain variation, knots and fine surface checks; these are inherent to the material and part of each piece’s character. Joinery is cut by hand; hardware, where used, is solid brass. Finishes are open-pore oils — repairable and made to age gracefully.
Care
Wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth and refresh the oil finish once or twice a year. Keep solid wood out of direct, prolonged sun and away from heat sources. Softer woods like white cedar will show the marks of daily life and patina over time — expected, and part of their charm. Small marks can be spot-sanded and re-oiled; every order ships with a care card.
Shipping & returns
Smaller objects ship by insured carrier; furniture ships blanket-wrapped freight across the continental US. Local delivery around the Seacoast and central NH can be arranged. Made-to-order work is non-returnable, but every piece is guaranteed against defects in materials and workmanship — if something is not right, we will make it right.
